Poll: Which band’s reunion are you most looking forward to?

26 05 2009

So what will it be?  You’ve already heard the fruits of AC/DC’s reunion, No Doubt and Blink 182 have had their first public appearances in years, Michael Jackson has 50 lined up at the O2 arena,  Jane’s Addiction will be hitting our shores for Splendour in the Grass and you can not deny the sheer jubilation you felt when you first heard about Creed’s reunion.

Or have we missed the mark? Is there another reunion to top them all?

Tokenview: Music to fill the Arcade Fire-shaped hole in all of us

Tokenview: Quite dapper looking pirates

I think I’m one among many who after getting into Arcade Fire in a big way, got over them in a similar fashion.  Somehow I get the feeling Tokenview might just have what it takes to step in and fill the void. Read the rest of this entry »

Eskimo Joe: Music to pass off as your own

19 05 2009

Kashmir II

Please tell me I’m not the only one hearing an uncomfortable amount of ‘Kashmir’ in Eskimo Joe’s new single, ‘Foreign Land’?

I won’t complain though. Heck, that would be a bit hypocritical of me, really, considering the fact that I’m the one responsible for the whole ‘Viva La Vida’ mess.

Yes, that’s right, seven years ago, whilst teaching myself to strum an acoustic guitar, I chanced upon the magical “IV, V, I, iv” chord progression, creating a plagiaric monster of significance I could have never foretold.

Coldplay, Joe Satriani, Cat Stevens and the Creaky Boards all stole it off me. Cat Stevens went so far as to travel back in time 36 years (presumably using his mystic powers) to seemingly release ‘Foreigner Suite‘ before I was born.  He even changed his name to Yusuf Islam just to cover his arse from lawsuits. Alternate IPL Anthems: Delhi Daredevils

18 05 2009

Current theme song: Delhi Daredevils Team Anthem

The form team of this year’s competition have a lot to sing about.   With arguably the best opening combination in the world for any form of cricket, the Daredevils would have liked to be singing the Black Eyed Peas ‘Let’s Get it Started’, but so far have relied on De Villiers and Dilshan’s rendition of ‘Recovery’ by Funeral for a Friend.  Their balanced line-up has worked, though, and having booked their spot in the semis, they’ll be busting out Snoop Dogg’s ‘Now is the Time’. Alternate IPL Anthems: Rajasthan Royals

18 05 2009

Current theme song: Rajasthan Royals Halla Bol

Warnie’s Royals have updated their theme song since their win in the inaugural competition last year.  ‘Halla Bol’, sung by the one and only, Shilpa Shetty, predictably focuses on their triumph – bragging is not exactly an unheard of trait amongst professional athletes/Indian celebrities/Shane Warne.  But as Bolly-licious as Halla Bol is, I’m not sure it really encapsulates the story of the Royals.

Lady Sovereign: To justify a bender

11 05 2009

Is it just me, or is there a growing trend of female singers acting like complete trash and earning a lot of money for it? Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen and now the darling Lady Sovereign have all graced our radios with their sordid lyrics and quite frankly, I am so over it. Read the rest of this entry »

Bob Dylan: While smearing Olay on your face

11 05 2009

I realise that I am slowly receding into the past with my music of choice. And yes, I also realise that any reader who was actually alive in the 60’s and 70’s (my mother included) would harrumph at me: “You weren’t there Jo; you have no idea what the time was like”. Well sue me for appreciating the somewhat distilled moments of other generations. Thanks to MY generation, I can Google, YouTube and iTunes the shit out of the Baby Boomers and choose whatever tickles my fancy. Furthermore, with Leonard Cohen’s recent tour hitting Brisbane, The Who having just left Australia and Simon and Garfunkel on their way; who could blame me for wanting to retreat into the past with Bob Dylan. Categorically Defining Your Aural Pleasure

11 05 2009

Let me be clear to those of you who can’t spell, I’m talking about the listening variety so you can get your sick dirty minds out of the gutter and take your sexy time elsewhere.

Putting aside the fickleties of genre and accepting that there will inevitably be some crossovers, the civilised world can ultimately be categorised into four types. Well, technically five, but I’m not counting the deaf or hearing impaired. These four types are defined by how they choose to pleasure their ears. For simplicity’s sake, and the fact that I don’t know what music North Koreans listen to, I’m going to focus on defining these categories from a western perspective. Heaven and Hell: Music to crack Dio jokes to

11 05 2009

Black Sabbath are an institution. I recently interviewed white rapper Necro, he said “Tony Iommiis solely responsible for the entire metal genre”. Big call. After not putting out a new studio album since 1995’s Forbidden (wasn’t it a good idea to get Ice T involved in that?), the band’s Ronnie James Dio line-up is getting back together to release The Devil You Know. Sleep, Melvins, Kyuss: Music to Listen to while Sleeping

11 05 2009

Have you ever fallen asleep wearing headphones? Apparently, it happens to people so much, entrepreneurs sell things like this. Having fallen asleep to everything from Scandinavian black metal to early 90s gangsta rap, I’ve compiled a list of my three favourite records to sleep to. Read the rest of this entry »
